phenomenology studio
phenomenology studio is a multidisciplinary creative ecosystem born out of a decade of research and a lifetime of questions.
the studio has 2 core principles:
1. contemporary art ought to challenge what we know, provoke a sense of what we don't, & delight us simultaneously.
2. texture & color are always a good idea.
In my art practice, I lead with my body. I lead with my sensory overwhelm, my disability, my neurodivergence. It is a singular space for un-convention, intuition, and chaos as a redeeming, imperceptible order, rather than something to fear.
I’m most influenced by my decade-long training in cognitive research psychology—constructions of individual and collective emotion, thought, belief, and memory. Even in the scientific language, we refer to these concepts as something we make.
I’m interested in the question of the process as the artwork. Is the work itself functioning as mere evidence of a relationship with an idea, a moment? How does it reflect the depth of a duration of time spent in the human experience? Finally, whose experience constitutes that human experience?
Inspired in equal parts by the textural works of Anselm Kiefer, the brevity of Barbara Kruger, and the collectible sensory oddities of my 1990’s childhood, my work remains centered in the unexpected-embodied.
